Cutting the cord: if you haven't stopped paying for cable or satellite TV, it's time. Yes, you can do it and be happier than you are with your current DVR (that you're probably paying a ridiculous monthly fee for).
Let me introduce you to Plex. Plex has saved us money for years and will record what's on TV for you.
1. An antenna for free local channels
We get our local channels free with an antenna. They're much better than back in the day and come in HD. My dad lives about 100 miles from the nearest big city and uses an amplified antenna like this one:
2. A computer to run Plex
You need something to run the Plex server. It can probably be a computer you already have: Windows, Mac or Linux, it doesn't matter. Go to plex.tv to get started.
If you like to tinker, a Raspberry Pi makes a tiny, low-power Plex server. It takes a little extra skill to set up, so I only recommend it if you're familiar with the Pi.
Give it plenty of storage for your recordings:
3. A tuner to record TV
To take it to the next level, you need a way to capture the HD signal from your antenna and put it on your network. Plex sees it, records it, organizes it, and can even skip the commercials. Free TV, no commercials. Does it get any better?
4. Something to watch it on
Now get something to play Plex on your TV. I recommend a Roku. Why? I like it, it works well, and it's cheap.
Make sure everything is connected to your network, and I guarantee you'll be impressed. Want it all in one list? See the Cut the Cord Kit.
